Used iPhone 3GS- Second Hand iPhone 3GS Guide

The iPhone 3GS was a small update to the 3G, coming a year later in 2009. It doesn’t take long to work out what the S stands for: Speed. In fact it almost sounds like the lettering of a hot hatch from Vauxhall. Although a subtle change this is the third generation of Apple’s iPhone.

Physically nothing had changed from the iPhone 3G on the outside. The only way you could tell a difference is by the actual logo on the rear. The big change though came under the skin: a faster processor, an improved camera and support for faster 3G downloading. Most significantly it’s memory (RAM rather that storage space) doubled from 128MB to 256MB. The more RAM you can get into any computer the better and this is the same for smartphones.

So why does this change matter? Well iOS 4 on the 3GS is not painful, multitasking works and performance is good. As well as that the 3GS gained Voice Control in order to control the phone and iPod by your voice commands as well as a Magnetometer, thus the ‘Compass’ App appearing on the homepage for the first time.

All of this makes the 3GS our preferred used iPhone. Why? Well it has the performance needed for iOS 4, it’s still affordable compared to the iPhone 4 and for many users it delivers the same great experience that the iPhone 4 does now. It may not have the rapid performance of the iPhone 4 or its far better camera, but you still get a great smartphone experience. It’s even got enough oomph to get iOS 5 when its due out in September.

UsedMac Verdict:

Good: More affordable than iPhone 4 used, still got enough performance to run the upcoming iOS 5 update

Bad: Camera poor compared to iPhone 4, no Facetime, no Retina Display

UsedMac Verdict: The budget iPhone choice and still going strong even with iOS5 on the horizon
