Are we any closer to the white iPhone 4?

White iPhone 4

After a wait that makes the Blackberry PlayBook look like it arrived early, you may soon be able to get hold of a White iPhone 4. This edition of the iPhone 4 was announced with the Black iPhone 4 some 10 months ago. It has never surfaced publicly in all that time despite a few lucky Apple celebs seeming to have one in the wild.

We posted back at the end of January this year that Orange had started taking pre-orders for them, but still 5 months on we're not aware of anyone receiving one.

According to Engadget though it seems that Vodafone here in the UK may be shipping them.

It can't of helped Apple that they have successfully delivered the iPad 2 in white, however seemingly no one seems to have given them a hard time over it (of all the companies to get an easy time from its customers, its going to be Apple). Perhaps given that the iPhone 5 is now rumoured to not arrive until the autumn in September, a white edition of the iPhone 4 may well keep interest in the handset until then.

The White iPhone 4 is here!

White iPhone 4

We reported what seems like milleniums ago that there was no sign of the white iPhone 4 yet, wondering if it had gone the way of Lord Lucan or whether Apple has just given up trying to make it, hoping we'd not notice it through blind excitement at iPad 2 rumours.

Well it seems it is here! We've just spotted that its an actual order option on Orange's website:

Orange now has the White iPhone 4 available

The White iPhone 4: available on Orange to order

As you can see its available in standard 16 gb form or the doubly more capacious 32 gb.

But will anyone bother now though with the next version possibly arriving in the summer?

I remember being asked if I wanted Black or White when I bought my first iPhone 3G. I almost scoffed at the idea of taking the white model over black. But then I saw a few white ones in the wild (well the office) and thought 'hmm it does stand out in a crowd'.

So thats what it does get you: exclusivity

If you want one you can put in an order over at Orange UK's site

Has anyone seen a white iPhone 4?

Lucan: More visible in Hoxditch than a White iPhone 4

Lucan: More visible in Hoxditch than a White iPhone 4

It's still not shipped. Anywhere. In fact it would be easier to have a Marathon bar with Lord Lucan than see one in an Apple Store.

It was announced back on June 24th along with the black (normal?) iPhone 4. The black model has obviously sold like hot cakes, with demand outstripping supply (and other such clichés).

What's causing the hold up? Are they trying to sneak in an Antenna fix? Has Gizmodo got them all? Have they decided to not bother and crack on with iPad 2?

It seems that it’s nothing that exciting according to MacNN. Apparently the change of colour is causing headaches in the manufacturing process and is adversely affecting the performance of the Proximity Sensor (this is the clever bit of the iPhone that can detect when you are actually using it as a phone, close to your ear, thus switching the screen off to save power).

Also the use of colour itself seems to bring issues with a special paint mix being required that doesn't flake. Anyone that has seen their white Macbook's discolour will appreciate the challenges that being virginal brings.

It would be easy to be amazed that simply changing colour can bring so many headaches, but let's not forget how Apple continually push the envelope with how they use materials and manufacturing techniques.

Surely the only question now is will anyone carry on waiting for a white iPhone 4?
