Channel 5′s Gadget Show wants a Galaxy Tab for Christmas

| Latest News | December 7, 2010

ondigital: No, Channel 5

On tonights Gadget Show on Channel 5 the presenters have chosen the Samsung Galaxy Tab as one of the gadgets they would most like to find under the tree.

Samsung's 7 inch Tablet, which has received very mixed reviews since its launch (one review described it as a 'shuttle crash'), scored well with the shows presenters.

In a duel between the Wii Move and XBOX Kinect, Gadget Show presenter Chris Bentley along with BBC Radio 1Xtra's Rampage crew - Treble T and Mike Anthony - voted the XBOX Kinect as their choice of game movement controller.

So how did Apple fair? Well, not too great in this edition. Surprising not to see the iPad pop up as part of the programme. Luckily though there was plenty of Apple produce in their weekly 'money couldn't buy' giveaway.

95% of Tablets are iPad’s as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab launches

Ancient Stone: Probably less rare than a Windows 7 Tablet

Apple's iPad now commands a monopolistic 95% of the Tablet market according to Strategy Analysts. They have reported that Apple's early lead has meant the iPad controls the market, yet the influx of Android tablets coming soon will apparently dent this figure somewhat.

Interesting then that I've just spotted this on my Twitter stream:

IT-Mobile Uk announce the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be on sale from the 10th November

Great News: If you don't want an iPad

So T-Mobile UK will soon have the 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab available for £529 on Pay As You Go. Is this too expensive? Or competitively priced given that its the same price as a 16GB iPad with Wifi + 3G?

Well if you feel that it should be cheaper, you may be surprised. Many presumed that the Android tablets would show up how overpriced Apple's iPad is because of the perception that Apple products are overpriced.

Bad news then for those that had hoped it would they would be cheaper, especially given the smaller screen.

What can we take from this? Well if Apple's rivals can't deliver a similar product that is a lower price but average on 'quality', then Apple must be offering a good price.

Bit if Apple's rivals aren't even matching the quality, nor undercutting healthily then it may be that they can't even come close to compete.

Or is the openness of Android enough for you to take the plunge with the Samsung over the iPad? Perhaps so. At UsedMac though we don't see enough appeal in the device to make that decision.

Techradar reviews the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Ancient Stone: Probably less rare than a Windows 7 Tablet

And its sounds, er, great:

"The device gets extremely hot after watching videos or browsing the web for an hour. This will be a major drain on battery life and indicates that either the Coretex 1Ghz processor isn't efficient enough, or the Galaxy Tab doesn't do a good enough job of harnessing its power in an efficient manor.

Either way, it's a drain on power and it's a problem the iPad just doesn't have. With screen brightness on max, you can actually see the battery life falling away in front of your eyes. This is despite Samsung claiming 7-hours' continuous movie play."

So it's smaller than the iPad, more expensive and nowhere near as elegant. Let's hope there are lots of fans of Openness out there for Samsung's sake.

(For some balance, it did at least seem to play our favourite BBC One spy drama, Spooks)
