MC700B/A | MacBook Pro 13″ 2.3GHz

| Brand New Apple Deals | September 5, 2011

MacBook ProThe MacBook Pro MC700B/A is the entry-level model for the Apple laptop range now the MacBook has been retired and replaced with 13-inch Pro’s. The MC700B/A has an Intel Core i5 Processor running at 2.3GHz, 4GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive all encased in a unibody aluminum case with an LED backlit screen.

The MacBook Pro 13” MC700B/A is available at the Apple Store for £999 but it is possible to get it cheaper from other online retailers. The price comparison table below shows the todays cheapest prices from over 30 of the leading retailers in the UK.

Apple is using the latest Intel dual-core and quad-core processors for this generation of MacBook Pro, with this 13” model, the MC700B/A, using the dual-core i5. These are still up to twice as fast as the previous generation MacBook Pro.

The 13 Inch models have some decent specifications until it comes to the graphics. Using shared memory to a maximum of 384MB, the MC700B/A is not really capable of serious design work or gaming. However, since when did people buy a 13 inch laptop to design on? As a compact, portable laptop for everyday use then the MacBook Pro 13” 2.3GHz is a perfectly good choice.

One of the best aspects of the MacBook Pro in recent times has been the battery life. If you were to simply use this on the go for basic applications and wireless web access then you are looking at a maximum of 7 hours. In the real world we’d make that 5+ hours though - which is still better than pretty much any PC laptop.

The MacBook Pro MC700B/A tends to include OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as standard, but upgrading to Lion is relatively straightforward and only £20.99 in the Mac App Store.

MacBook Pro’s still work after a 195mph crash

Immortal MacBook Pro

Obviously we are always telling how much of an investment a UsedMac is over a new Dell. It's like buying a nearly new BMW over a brand new Peugeot. It'll last longer and still be worth more.

Here's the proof of the durability too from OSX Daily:

Ok the screen is borked. But would a Toshiba Satellite still even boot after an 195 mph blow out?

The iPad Effect

Ancient Stone: Probably less rare than a Windows 7 Tablet

Tablet: Will anyone ever buy an iPad rival?

A friend I work with in radio texted me last night, asking me what audio editing software was good on the Mac. I obviously pointed him here to our own guide, presuming that he'd just gone out and brought a new Macbook Pro. I also replied with a few other options (Adobe Audition running on Bootcamp, Adobe Soundbooth, Cubase, Power Tools and the free Audacity if your interested).

Today he texted me back: "Cheers mate. Was thinking of getting a mac but spent the cash on an iPad instead"

Crikey. Not sure I would of. As much as I love the iPad, surely as an freelance producer he needs a 'proper' computer?

Or perhaps the shiney loveliness of it is too much to resist? I can just imagine myself watching Eastenders on it on TVCatchup in bed. Or emailing on the train. And let's be honest, I could write next weeks script on Notes. I wouldn't even have to buy iWork.

I see a challenge coming here. Could I spend a month with just an iPad? With the Macbook under lock and key? (It could go in one of my parents 7 different Home Safe's. Has anyone else suddenly noticed their Mum or Dad buying them from Argos all the time?)

Part of me thinks I could:

  • I spent a week with my iPhone alone and still managed to blog and email
  • The majority of my computing time is spent consuming media through a web browser
  • I can work with Apps such as iWork, there are numerous Image Editors for the iPad and of course Google Docs and WordPress still work
  • Most of the places I go have Wifi
  • The battery life is excellent

On the other hand:

  • If I want to add new music I still need my Macbook to sync it
  • Nothing is nicer to type on than my Macbook with its half height keys. Surely a touchscreen wouldn't come close? I'd have to have a Bluetooth keyboard
  • I can't multitask, so blogging whilst surfing whilst IMing on AdiumX is out, surely?
  • I can't charge my iPhone on it :-)
  • It wont run our favourite Web Browser: Chrome
  • It wont run our favourite video player: VLC (Correction: it may soon if Apple let it.)
  • It hasn't got an illuminated Apple logo

I think that within a week at the most I'll be wanting to sync my iPhone or iPad with new content. It would still be a good challenge to try out though at some point.
