Apple Press: iPhone 4G Press Conference

| Latest News | July 15, 2010

It appears Apple is finally fed up of all the bad press regarding the new iPhone 4G and has called a press conference for tomorrow (Friday) at 5pm BST.

Now, there are two possible scenarios: 1) Apple announce a recall. This is highly unlikely but still possible. 2) Apple systematically addresses each supposed fault with the iPhone 4G to reassure customers and owners. The free release of plastic bumpers could also be announced.

The iPhone 4G has received some bad press since its launch regarding poor signal strength and possible design flaws. However the straw that broke Jobs' back appears to be the review in Consumer Reports stating they could not recommend the new iPhone owing to the signal issues. At one point, soon after the report was published, almost $10 billion was wiped off the market value of Apple.

Has Apple Acquired Poly9?

| Latest News | July 14, 2010

Rumour is rife that that Apple has quietly acquired the online mapping company Poly9 Group. Cyberpresse, a French-Canadian online news site released the story today and, as yet, Apple has not denied it. The software in question is the Poly9 Globe and is basically an embeddable version of Google Earth. It runs on JavaScript and will be easily compatible with the Apple HTML5 'revolution'.

Official Apple maps would make a great App for iPad and iPhone, as well as improve their general online services - something Google is obviously much stronger in. However, in order to compete with Google maps Apple really need to get this right very quickly.

NTP Sues Apple, Google and Others

| Latest News | July 9, 2010

Lately it appears nobody understands patents and IP law when it comes to manufacturing smartphones. Well, everyone except Nokia that is. Nokia has licensed software from NTP Inc. to deliver emails to smartphone mobile devices however Apple, Microsoft, Google, HTC, LG Electronics and Motorola seem to have forgotten. NTP has today filed lawsuits against these companies claiming they infringe on 8 patents relating the email on wireless devices.

NTP successfully sued RIM (Research in Motion) who make Blackberry smartphones for a similar infringement in 2006. Critics argue that NTP hit the jackpot against RIM and are now merely trying to rinse as much money from their patents as possible before they expire in 2012. Regardless, if Apple et al has infringed then surely this is fair game?

Adobe Audition for the Mac

| Latest News | July 8, 2010

Ever since the dawn of Mac's they have been loved by the creative industries. Whether it was Midi keyboards back in the day on OS9 or people manipulating their photos on Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop. And now my favourite audio editing application is heading the way of Snow Leopard.

Now one of my specialist subjects is sound. It's close to my heart  - my day job is spent making things sound great and come out of your Radio.

Today in OS X we can find some of the industries leading Sound Editing programmes:

From Pro Tools to Logic at the top end right down to the completely free Garageband and Audacity. If your laying down a new Dubstep track or editing your own podcast, they're is an app for that (and I'll be looking at some of the options in the coming weeks).

However my favourite audio software for radio production is Adobe Audition. It started life as Cool Edit Pro in the late 90's and from its inception it became the de facto choice for the manipulation of sound and mixing for me. It still used daily across many international broadcasters.

There is though an issue. As I write, Audition will only run on Windows. Up until now there has never been a version for the Mac. Ironic given that more and more creative media professionals are flocking to Macbook Pro's and iMac's. Often colleagues ask me how if there is a way of running it on OS X. Sadly the only way to get it on your Mac is to Bootcamp and run it on Windows.

Finally the gods at Adobe have answered our prayers though:

Checking out the Preview videos, it seems to be looking good and as soon as I can get my hands on a beta I shall give it a spin.

Apple Acknowledge iPhone 4G Fault

| Latest News | July 6, 2010

Apple has admitted there is a problem with the new iPhone 4G relating to a weak network signal when gripped with your left hand. The metal trim on the iPhone acts as an antenna - the left side for phone calls and the right side for data. However, some users have reported a loss of signal when they gripped the phone with their palm on the lower left corner - effectively shorting out the signal.

Other users have reported a poor signal even when their handset shows 4 or 5 bars of signal strength. Apple admits there is an issue with false signal readings rather than actual signal loss. Apparently the iPhone 4G was showing more signal strength than was actually available and will release a software update.

Critics argue the problem could well be hardware not software related hence the left-handed grip issue. Whatever the problem it is relatively minor and shouldn't affect the massive sales of the new iPhone 4G.
